Christmas came early for 5th District Republicans. On Thursday they got what they needed, a key sign of unity. After a rough primary Republican runner up Jim McKelvey had been acting coy as to whether he would support the party nominee Robert Hurt. However on Thursday McKelvey issued a statement saying that he and Hurt, a state senator from Chatham, see eye to eye on key issues.
"I am emboldened by the new conservative leadership that has taken hold in the Republican Party here in the Fifth District," he said in the release. "Robert Hurt has pledged to fight for and preserve certain social and fiscal conservative principles that I hold dear."
The endorsement is good news for Republicans and bad new for Democrat incumbent Tom Perriello.
