Audit Finds Hundreds of Millions Unspent at VDOT

An independent audit conducted by the Richmond-based accounting firm of Cherry, Bekaert & Holland found that the Virginia Department of Transportation is sitting on 800 million in reserve funds that could be used for new construction and maintenance.

"That is unacceptable," McDonnell told a news conference today. "Money has been sitting in the state's wallet, while Virginians have been sitting in traffic." The Governor said that plans for how to spend the money will be decided by the end of the year, but the Governor has cited the need to widen U.S. Route 460 from Suffolk to Petersburg, to build HOT lanes from the Washington suburbs to Occoquan and to construct more interchanges on Interstate 66 in Northern Virginia.

I wish I could find an extra 800 million in my bank account.

One more incidence of Tim Kaine's legacy. I believe some heads should roll over this; totally dishonest, and indicative of a department which feels that it does not have to answer to the taxpayers of Virginia!

And.....I concur with Governor McDonnell's plans, particularly with Rt 460. Changes are desperately needed there in order to save lives. Four lanes of traffic (2 in each direction) with NO dividers is one scary adventure, and the traffic has gotten increasingly heavier over the years. What used to be a small "country" highway has now turned into a super speedway.
